Proud to be B Corpª

We recently announced our certification as a B Corporation®, and we couldn't be prouder. We have joined over 6,000 amazing businesses globally to have met B Corps™ high standards of social and environmental responsibility and transparency.

The B Corp™ certification addresses the entirety of a business’ operations and covers five key impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers.

We scored 89.7 points out of 200 on the B Impact Assessment. A minimum of 80 points is required to achieve B Corp status.

We are on a mission to become the world’s definitive zero carbon lighting brand and this announcement marks the next step in that journey. Founded in 2015 by Joshua Ward, Maxwell Wood and William Symington, Tala was built on the premise that ‘good design can help mitigate climate change’ and this concept has underpinned the company’s efforts since its inception.

From responsible product design and advocating the ‘right to repair’ movement, to promoting low-energy LED technology and working with international partners on tree planting projects, our culture and values are strongly linked to the B Corp™ ethos.

"As a purpose-led company, Tala is proud to be a certified B Corp™. We’re excited to be part of the growing movement. The rigorous impact framework has highlighted areas for improvement, and the application process alone has strengthened the company. We're proud of the team and progress made to date but we feel like we’re only just getting started." Tala founders Joshua Ward, Maxwell Wood and William Symington

By using the B Impact Assessment (BIA), Tala can benefit from structured ESG improvement and objective progress milestones. Being part of the BIA framework also means that it is closely connected to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which can offer guidance on how Tala can reshape its practices in future while using its platform to make progress on the SDGs in the next decade.

There are currently over 1,100 B Corps in the UK and 6,279 worldwide. Tala joins five other lighting industry B Corps™ in the UK, including Shoplight, White Light, Stoane Lighting, Skinflint and PHOS.

Teamwork makes the dream work

To arrive where we are today, it has taken the hard work of many people from different parts of the world. In a nod to our team, both old and new, we salute those members of Team Tala that got us here.

What is B Corp™?

A B Corp is a business that meets the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. That’s how we’ve always done business - but now we’ve made it official. Harnessing the power of business, B Corps use profits and growth to create a positive impact for their employees, communities and the environment.

B Corps work together across the globe for reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities and the creation of jobs with dignity and purpose. They want to inspire other companies to join them.

There are currently over 6200 B Corps in 161 industries and 89 countries across the globe and we’re very proud to be a member of the global B Corps network in March 2023.
